Today is my handsome husband's birthday, and I spoke to him a while ago about what he would like me to make for him. We decided on a shirt, (like he needs any more!) and having admired floral shirts on various TV presenters over the years, I offered to make him one.
We looked at the Liberty poplins over at Sewbox, and I chose a lovely soft grey and pale blue floral print, abut Colm chose what I thought to be a much bolder, darker floral. I asked the opinions of a few girls whom I know online, through sewing, and one girl in particular has a son who considers himself rather an expert in Liberty for men's shirts. He chose the same dark floral for Colm...his advice was that it would be the best print for "a Beginner"! (referring to the wearer rather than the person sewing it!)
So the expert, and the wearer had spoken...
The fist waving is directed at the young lad who called him a beginner! (not at you, my lovely readers!)
I also bought a new shirt pattern. I have the Colette Negroni shirt pattern, but it has a very informal camp collar, I felt that the floral shirt would look better in a more formal dress shirt style. I was however worried about the loose cut of the Kwiksew shirt, so I made a muslin in a size L, and as I suspected, it was too big all over. I made the real thing in a Medium. There is not much room to spare, but I like the fit.
I found some lovely little grey buttons in amongst my button collection...I am always surprised when I am making a garment, I imagine certain buttons on it, but when I lay it out, with the buttons laid out on it, they seldom look how I imagined. I usually end up with something completely different. I had thought of black mother of pearl on this, but the leaped out from the floral.
Happy Birthday Handsome!

That shirt looks excellent on Colm, great fit and print! I've been wondering if I should make Steven a shirt but I suspect he wouldn't wear it :) Happy birthday to Colm.
Colm looks great, Millie. Now, if only I could get Mr G in to one...
It's looks awesome on him. Perfect colour and the fit is really good.
Thanks Amanda! I hope Colm does wear this now! This could be it's one and only public appearance! Ask Steven..he might surprise you!
Thank you Ana! Keep working on Mr G!
Thanks Cornelia... that is very kind of you to say.
Handsome is as handsome does!(no idea what that means,my Nan used to say it)
Happy Birthday Colm!
You look great and your missus deserves a bunch of flowers for that shirt;
(And Hugo is too scared to come and milk your cows now)
I hope that Colm has had a Happy Birthday! Love the shirt...the print is perfect.:)
I love the shirt and it looks like you did a great job on the fit. I hope he gets lots of wear out of it. It's on my to-do (aka long finger) list to make a shirt for my husband, especially as he so appreciated the tie I made him last year!
Love your work.
I love this shirt, Millie - you are an amazing seamstress! And I repeat my earlier comment - Colm's a spunk! (in the Aussie 1980s meaning of the word - hehehehe!)
Thanks Nicole! H is safe enough...we've had waaay cheekier than him working here! He's welcome anytime!
We use a similar phrase "Pretty is as pretty does", it means that you can look good, but it is your actions that count!
Thanks Cindy!
Thanks Angela...I hope you get to make your husband a shirt...I remember the tie! More Liberty?!
Thanks velosewer!
Thank you Justine...I told him, and he blushed!
Your shirt looks fabulous, Millie! How lucky Colm is :) I am trying out the Negroni shirt for our anniversary but am glad to know that the Kwik Sew came out so beautifully, too! Does it also have flat felled seams inside? How did you find making it up? Lyn
Thanks Lyn...I did not do flat felled seams, mainly because the Kwiksew pattern only had 1/4" seam allowances. It made up without a hitch. The instructions were easy to follow, and I especially liked how the cuffs come together.
If I had a plaid or something else more "manly" but casual, I would be using the Negroni...I just wanted this floral to be made into a more formal shirt. Good luck with your Negroni!
And what a shirt! Colm and I share a birthday, I hope he had as lovely a day as I did. We roamed the streets of Shrewsbury for the day.
Struggling with the dress - what did I put myself in for?
Oh Kath....Happy Birthday! I hope you had a lovely time. I made C a cake for his birthday and used a cake stand I bought in Shrewsbury! I was thinking about that shop as I used it!
Let me know if I can help with the dress...my email is in my profile.
That shot of Colm with his fist is just priceless!
Thank you Boss Sister!! It's very like him, I think!
Oh hello good lookin! And the husband is nice too. I always think, you can tell a lot about man by how he feels about wearing florals. Just found your blog via a lovely comment you left on mine...love your style and reading your profile, your lifestyle sounds just dreamy. Think I'll pop back regularly.
Thank you very much Sophie...I keep telling myself that no one will mistake him for a girl, even with all that floral!
I may have to change my profile...dreamy it ain't! Well not always anyway! Thanks for stopping by!
