New Bedroom

At last we are in our new bedroom...I know, I probably haven't mentioned before this, that we were working on it...but it has been going on for soooo long that you'd have all got bored and left by now.
Last year we converted quite a bit of our upstairs. It had never been finished off fully by the previous owners and we never really used it properly, only ocasionally for summer visitors when the house was very full.

However there was one room which we never touched in the conversion. It was to be our bedroom. During the conversion we stored stuff in it and after the kids rooms were done we emptied it and gave it a lick of paint and moved into it.
So this summer we set about ripping it apart and insulating it properly. We put in two Velux roof-lights, we took off all the hardwall, insulated, studded and replastered the whole lot, stippled ceiling and all! We got new carpet fitted in it and the upstairs hall and the landing.

From the door...

It was a slightly odd shaped room with a chimney breast in it, so we moved stuff about..(not the chimney)..and added a walk-in wardrobe (closet).

The whole project has taken ages...for loads of reasons, none of them within our control. The older children have been sharing all this time, I had planned that they would be back in their own rooms by the start of school on 1st of September! So much for that!

From the bed...

And yes, we have a TV in our room, and yes it's ancient. The colours are sometimes a mile off, we watch cows calving on it, via CCTV, as well as normal TV! Maybe Santa might bring us a nice flat new one, which we can hang on the wall, and hide the sockets!

The wardrobe/dressing room/closet is behind where the chest-of-drawers is, the door is around to the left.

From the wardrobe door....

Anyway, enough moaning...We are thrilled with the end result. It feels like a proper grown-up master bedroom. (aside from the 2 quid paper lampsade!)

The curtains are lined sheer linen and need a bit of attention, they have lost a button and a hook or two. I made them several years ago.
The wall colour is Farrow and Ball Shaded White.
I have owned the dressing table since I was about 10.
The bed we bought when we moved into the house, over 8 years ago, it is made by Willis and Gambier...we love it.
The chest of drawers was being thrown out by friends of ours, so of course I took it.
The TV is inherited from my Aunt! Literally!
I bought the chair locally in shop that my friend refers to as "The Dead People's Furniture Shop!"
I don't suppose anyone cares about all of this...!

I thought I'd show you my bed-side books at the moment...both are amazing! Colm is also reading the smaller one....

Your new bedroom looks great!

And watching cows calve by t.v. is a great idea - even if it is an old t.v. A man in the latest Progressive Dairyman keeps a baby monitor by his bed and just listens all night! So, ancient tv or not, tv is still more technologically advanced! *L*

Thanks Naptime Seamstress....We live 2 miles from the cows, so it is great to only have to get up when assistance is actually needed, not to just look in and see that nothing is happening!
I had heard of the baby monitors too, but these cameras are not too expensive, so we've had one for about 7 years now.

I love your new room! It's so beautiful and the natural light is heavenly! I imagine it's worth all the effort you put in.

Your bedroom looks lovely.

I might get that Steve Biddulph book - I'm already worrying about child rearing and I haven't even had the baby yet!

I love your new bedroom, all the work you've put into it has paid off! It looks great!

Thanks Heather....it has been worth it. For sure. Our downstairs is quite dark, so I was determined to make upstairs as bright as possible.

Thank you Andrea..... The camera and TV stays on all night for the whole Spring, if there is noise from the cows we check it out!

Thanks Ciara...If it didn't need insulating, I'm sure I'd still be waiting!

Thanks Ana...He has also written "The Secret of Happy Children". I haven't read it, but it might be worth a look, and don't worry, it's a piece of cake!!!!

Thanks Walk in Wardrobes, it was one of our biggest investments in a piece of furniture, ever!

Thank you Nicole...it is great to be finished it all.

Lovely! I imagine that you'll enjoy some star gazing as you drfit off to sleep, perhaps? I can't think of a nicer sight to have when drifting off...

How are you doing with your livestock in this weather, Millie? Hope you don't have any stuck animals anywhere!

Millie said...

Thank you Niamh!

Thanks Val...believe it or not we have had snow for a while now and the windows have been covered in snow almost since we moved in...but yes the plan is to watch the stars!

Thanks for your concern Ana...Our livestock is almost all indoors by this time of year, all the milking cows are in and the older in-calf heifers, the only ones out are young (not in calf) females who can come in to shelter and food. Water is the main problem..keeping it defrosted. Also the milking machine has to be drained twice a day, because if a small amount of water freezes in it, it won't work and that is a MAJOR problem...the cows must be milked!

The big window and double velux are great - it's all very serene and stylish and I'm ever so impressed by the CCTV bedtime viewing.

Thanks Mise, I love the double velux. The room feels serene to be in, which is great after a long day.
I never get bored of watching cows calve,(on TV or in real life) even after 30 odd years of seeing it.
