More tops for me....

I ordered two back issues of Ottobre women a little while ago with plans to make a couple of new tops for me. I am fed up with my Vogue pattern for knits that I used for the grey floral top I made a while ago. I gave the top to a pregnant friend the other day, by the way! So I wanted to try a new pattern for knit fabric.

This is the first one I made...... Really sorry for the poor photo.....

I had the coral coloured fabric in my stash and the green was ribbing I had too. I made this as a wearable muslin and really just threw the fabrics together, but everyone seems to like them! I am really happy with this pattern. I could imagine I'll make it lots....

On the other hand......

I think the body language says it all!

I've tried everything to make it look better but to no avail! I look like a 'Sack of Spuds' in it! ( That's a bag of potatoes BTW)

I really like the fabric and I think I can hack it up and make it into a skirt for the summer.....all that work on those pin tucks.......

The children are on mid-term for a couple of days, so we're trying to catch up with a few people that we haven't seen in a while.

These two photos show two different persons! You look amazing in the coral top, I really LOVE it! But as you said, maybe the other one would make a better skirt...;-)

Thanks Nicole... for your honesty!
The coral top seems to work well, it has 3 layers of jersey across the tummy which seems to suck in that area a bit!
The other one as you say...best as a skirt. The fabric is a lovely linen (mix?) so I'd be happy to salvage it.

The first top is such a flattering style for you - really nice fit, and a great colour. As for the other one - I agree, the fabric is great! ;) No, really - sewing for yourself is soo difficult - I have made a few things for myself, but I wear only two items - the rest ended up in the closet. The fit needs to be so much more precise than with the children. You did a great job! :)

Millie- I saw the coral top last night on flickr and loved it on you- both the colour and fit. Well done! Where did you get the fabric? As for the second- well- hmmmm- I dont wish to be unkind but the comparison with the coral top says it all- doesn't suit you :-(

I think you look great in the coral top and .....well the floral one would be better turned into a skirt or something !! Well done for your sewing.

Oh, you are sweet! You look so unhappy in the second one... but good you are positive and will use the beautiful fabric in another way!

The red one is great! Have a nice weekend,

Nina

Thnak you all for your honesty! I love honesty!....

Astrid- I agree, it is more difficult for yourself.. one thing I did learn with the coral one is, to make a smaller size than I have been. I somtimes make tops too big and they look sloppy and don't look well.

Maureen- The fabric was a remnant from my local fabric shop in Ireland here http://www.dressfabricsdirect.ie/. It is lovely quality but I wasn't sure about the colour, everyone else seems to think it's nice though.

Dina- Thank you, I'll get hacking at it soon, I'll keep you posted!

Nina- I look unhappy, not just with my top, but with my husband for taking so many terrible photos and making me say rude words to make me smile! And with my children for acting-up whilst waiting for their bedtime story. The linen will hopefully make a nice skirt!

I agree, the wrap top is great.

My version of the pintuck top was absolutely horrible - so you can blame it on the pattern, I think (:

Thanks Joy...I will blame the pattern!
Not me and my love of food!

Yes, that's the problem with sewing for yourself, isn't it. You put time and effort into a piece and then it turns out so different than you imagined. I had my disasters, too. But I did learn what suits my and what not (at least I hope). No wide tops for me either, I need slim fits.
So I won't make the cover of the latest Ottobre womans issue, but the pants in there I'm dying to try.
We're almost snow-free here in Holland. Hope spring is coming to Ireland, too, very quickly.

Winter Tree... You are welcome. I read your news.. congrats. I'm so glad he arrived safe and well. Rest yourself, try and put your feet up when you can, and enjoy these early days.
As for fast, I'm just terribly impatient!

Ria... I kind of knew the tunic wouldn't suit me, but like you I learned a few things anyway. I'll be making the wrap again though.
We had to travel a long distance yesterday and met 4 seasons in one day. I look foward to seeing the trousers...

Just discovered your blog - it's January 2011, and here I am browsing way back to Feb 2010. Re- the white/blue linen tunic - it's the sleeves that are unbalancing it. Take them up to be more of a cap sleeve, maybe shorten them about 50% on the outer edge. That, and maybe aiming for more of an A-line feel to the top, will make any future attempts at this pattern feel prettier. Of course, all this is assuming you haven't already repurposed the whole thing :-).

I am SO enjoying your blog. I don't sew as much as I used to, as I commute for work a few days/week, and also op-shop for the bulk of my and my girls' clothes.

Thank you Jac's Mum...That blue/white tunic went to a new home as soon as I found a taker. I don't think she has worn it either, mind you! But thank you for your advice..I appreciate that.
